Yes, as unless the transmission tunnel is perfectly sealed to stop anything getting through, which I seriously doubt, then tyre smoke will be coming in.

Sound, just that I've seen smoke coming out of someone's gear lever when they weren't wheel spinning so thought it was the clutch.
