Was anyone else pissed off when they tried to make a Renault Avantime ( ) faster than an Evo 10 round a track, then when they couldn't sent out a sweeping statement saying modifying cars is a 'waste of time and money' (or something along those lines).
I know they're not especially scientific when it comes to stuff like that, but considering that ALL the forums you go on, where most people modify cars, rave about how good TG is they could have done a bit of market research before saying something like that. Cut me deep, man.
And was it just me that thought the Avantime looked cool as fuck when they were done with it?

It is a waste of time and money. But so are most hobbies, so it doesn't really matter?

just take it with a pinch of sault mate..
you have to remember that these guys earn enough to just have about any car they want.. if you was in the same situation im sure you would probably thing its a waste of money aswell.

Don't take what Top Gear says to heart, just look at the pretty cars and laugh at the daft jokes tbh.

tbh, with the right guidance, that car could have easily been as quick as an EvoX in my opinion. They would have been told what to do and what not to do to get the desired outcome i.e. slower times to begin with.
It's called mediation.

Agreed
Most people i know think a car is a -> b and thats it so have cheap runabouts and dont care about scratches or dents etc.

i think some people are missing something here, they did make the car go faster, it was a bad car in the first place so the improvment they got out of it was good.

When I did the 'shoot' of my car like in my avatar, I was supposed to be picking my mum up from my aunties. She couldn't understand why I wanted to take pictures of my car

Yup like when they did that generation hill sprint with the Gash 306
Watched the road test for the CL63 Black the other day, was a great pieace Clarkson should stick to this type of journalism.

My housemate looked at me, trying to make fun of me when Clarkson said 'modifying cars is a waste of money'
Ok, fair enough I could probably buy something faster than my car for the money I've spent on it, but then he tried to tell me you couldn't buy a car and then modify it to make it faster than an Evo X for the £30k budget.
At that point I told him to gtf, there are many cars faster than that that have been built/modified for less than £30k

This is the issue, top gear has made lots more people consider themselves to be interested in cars, which they are generally not. I can't stand people who take top gear as gospel and spout shit off an episode like it's the law

should write in and get them to put the stig round in a c20xe/c20let* conversion.. would be intresting to see.
Note: In no way shape or form am i stating a c20xe or c20let corsa are as fast as an evo x

TBF it was obvious everytime it went out on track whether it'd be faster or slower than the previous lap.
Add bigger wheels and bigger brakes = lots more unsprung weight = slower lap time despite the increased braking ability
Strip some weight out = a bit quicker
Add F1 Spoiler that sits far too high to do anything for aerodynamics = extra weight and extra drag = slower lap
It's not hard to grasp.
As we all know, Top Gear is now an entertainment show that is based on cars. They do what makes entertaining tv and add some facts here and there instead of the old Top Gear setup of facts and just car features, no races, no challenges etc.
