I think all of my old man's cars from around 1998 onwards have been diesels. I've driven his latest 320d and I have to say, for the driving I do, it is fantastic. I love the torque on offer and I'm not really that fussed about the rev range, but I can understand the frustration for those extra rev's at times.... I've been a sprint in my cousins 335d, which was rapid, it just gives a relentless stream of torque with its auto box... Definately something I'm going to look at when I graduate and have a few quid to spend.

Why crappy? It is true that they are a bit 'unrefined' and noisy but they can take beating. IMO Isuzu makes solid diesel engines (in pickups etc), better than Toyota, far better than the French! And I am not talking only about daily applications but heavy pulling and daily driving in the sand in Libya

What he said ^^^. I like my Corsa 1.5 TD. It's cheap to tax, cheap to insure, cheap to run, easy to drive, very reliable, pulls on the hills, great on the motorway and just keeps on going (had it for over 10 years with no problems).
Shame that I'm gonna be selling it soon - I just bought a '08 Mk5 Golf TDI Match.

I just changed from a saxo vts to pd 130 ibiza a few months ago
I dont do many miles, but now I dont think twice amount popping down to Edinburgh or further. I also think diesels are alot nicer to drive, torquey and fine for cruising in.
Also saves me thrashing the fuck out of it like I did with my past few petrol cars 
I bought my ibiza fr with 12k on the clock, 1 year old. Wasnt any more expensive than the petrol models.
And the fact if I get fed up of the power, a remap will sort that out

He didn't mean crappy in the sense they are shit. He is just talking about 'modern' diesel's so didn't want opinions on the older ones.

I've only had my Golf 1.9 for about week but loving it.
As someone else said, it quite a lazy way of driving but I still feel involved in what the car is doing. When it comes on boost in 3rd its far quicker than my Corsa ever was despite the lack of revs. Plus its very smooth and very quiet in any gear other than first. Oh, and 60mpg to work every morning this week is awesome too.
As I say, I've only had it a week or so, but unsure whether I would ever go back to petrol.
I'm now keeping a remap in mind for a bit more mid-range shove but don't really understand what I'm looking for TBH. ChippedUK recon I would see +30bhp and 50Nm of torque which seems pretty damn good for about £350. They also reckon more economical too which I don't quite get either - presumably the new map just chucks more fuel in?

For remaps I think Revo are the boys, can also turn it on or off aswell with a plug in device
Think the new map sorts out air/fuel ratios and it runs more economically and usually get better mpg at 70mph

Think mine has a heavy flywheel and a bit of turbo lag. But once it's going there is quite a large amount of rev range to have some fun with. Love it

I dont realy do enough miles to need a diesel but i do like the lazy driveing style that lots of torque brings.
But haveing sead that nearly every other day i want to swap my diesel for a rev hungry petrol engine that sounds

I have always wondered the point of diesels but nowadays they are just as quick if not quicker sometimes than the petrol equivalent models.
Plus I can see the bonuses of lots of MPG now that I'm in a position where I need to drive alot. Obviously from what Joe said they can be more expensive to fix, but I guess that could happen to all cars.

My 1.9CDTI 150 Astra SRI was immense! Only reason I got rid of it was because I have wanted a VXR since they came out!
I will be going back to a DERV again in the future definatley.
