What's the deal with these?
I'm trying to think of a decent name for a software consultancy but every single one I try is already registered at companies house.
Is it basically that if it's registered at companies house then there is no way I can use it?

You can register a company name and trade under a different one. Got to be careful for anything that is trademarked though.

What about your name consultancy.
I assume you are making sure any prospective name has an URL available.

Well yeah but the companies house check comes first, not much point checking for a domain if the company name isn't available.
I wanted Xenon Consulting but it was taken

Looking at getting out of ML then mate? I know your colleague who I did the correction work on the A8 for wasn't feeling too sure about his job security
I had to change my name right at the start of my business as some sneaky bugger had registered it pretty much at the same time as I was setting up - I brought the domain name and he registered the company name

You can, you can get away with just about anything.
I know this as my old boss has abused the system to its full potential. Ripped off the company he worked for, stole all their clients and changed 1 letter in the company's name, a 'k' to a 'q'. Even survived the legal proceedings which followed.
