my mate just passed his driving test and is looking a car. Tells me today he's going to buy a 2004 1.2sxi corsa for 4800 quid am i right in thinking this is mad money??

Depends on mileage and condition tbf.

But seems a tad overpriced. Mines only worth that or £5k at a real push

Unless it has something like 15/20k miles on it and is immaculate all round, it's way overpriced.
