Looking for a mate who's not going for DAS, he's being sensible and having 2 years on a 33hp (25kW) bike.

What would you suggest?

sorry, budget (as it is only for 2 years) is £2500ish.

Don't want Aprillia RS or Cagiva or Derbi

Kwasaki 250.

Great little looking bike, just needs more umph.... But thats a brand new bike, and tbh, if he's buying a machine, he'll soon get bored, and want a new one come the 2 years.

Is he on a limited access (33bhp). If so, why not look at a bigger bike, but with a restrictor.

I've said it before, and i'll say it plenty of times again.


Suzuki SV650S with 33bhp restrictor kit.


Great little sports tourer bike, cheap to run, cheap to insure, cheap parts, plenty of modifying part, stunning Vee Twin engine note, low down power, huge online community. Learn to ride the bike, then after 2 years, remove the inlet restrictors, another 40bhp and a good step up, without having to buy a new bike.

I still regulary visit the SV site as its a nice place.
Honestly, im still considering an SV650S for a track bike, just to wipe the smile off of some SS600 owners.

Search for Blue_SV650S on youtube. His is a basically standard bike, but he goes out on "advanced" track sessions. Wipes the floor with many big bikes, who fly past him on the straights, only to get oblitorated round the corners.

Great choice.

But many are old, ropey, thrashed, and are getting older. Common to have gearbox issues. But still great bikes if you can find a good one (which is hard these days).

Nahh, stay away, really not worth it. Costly to run, costly to insure, and so many better bikes for the money. Save buying a Ducati until he can really ride, appreciate, and most importantly, afford to fix them when it goes wrong (I LOVE Italian bikes, going wrong is part of owning one, but far more passion in the bikes over a japanese bike).

I'd be more inclined (if he really wants a Ducati) to look at a Monster. But no more performance than the SV, but double the costs to buy/run it.

Curvey SV's are down in the £1k-£2k region (1999-2002 (K1 and K2)), and the Pointy versions are between £1.5k-£5k brand new (K3-K8).

Budget bikes, but its his first, theres a chance he'll bin it (hopefully not). Don't be fooled by goign to buy the biggest fastest bike he can afford. Real bikers do corners, biker chavs are all about the straightline speed.

Having less power, but a big bike, will enable him to learn how to ride it, use the brakes, engine, lines. Plus the SV is a really forgivving engine, and very reliable.

There are other bikes, plenty to choose from, but for a new rider, on restriction, cost vs enjoyment + learning, its the best.

How do you go about sorting restrictor kits; are they off the shelf? Do youhave to have the bike inspected as proof of fitting?

Not 100%, but basically its 2 trumpets that sit in the airbox, basically cutting airflow. Kinda like you see BTCC and F3 cars with restrictors on the airboxes. LEss air = less power (less air, less fuel, less power).

REALLY easy to fit. 2 bolts, tank up, unclip airbox lid, fit in trumpets, reclip, rebolt, job done.

RE insurance, unsure, pop on www.sv650.org as theres plenty of newbie riders and i know its been covered before. The search actually works on that site

Again, great little bikes....

But we're talking early to mid 90's, and similar costs compared to the SV....

1995 bike with less weight
or
2000+ bike, with more cc, but more weight

Performance is roughly the same.

£1500-£2k on a newer bike still won't kill him though.

Not knocking the other suggested bikes, but its a bit like owning a modified car, you WILL have problems of some sort

Parts are much harder to find, hence more expensive, where as the newer ones, well I changed my whole engine (my bad, my fault) for £250, for a lump with 10k less miles. Much easier to source should the worst happen.

All good suggestions though, IF you can find a good one (I absolutly LOVE the little ZXR400, its a scaled down superbike for the road )

The SV650s are cracking bikes my mates got one (crashed it more times than I can count however!).
I'd suggest a Thundercat.
