Just a general question about the 96 sport...
Over there in the UK is the 96 sport a cable speedo or electronic? Not sure if it's the same here in Oz.

A friend was just charged $326 AU for this:
Labour:
- body electrical
- speedo inop, remaining on zero
- checked and confirmed no speed. began diagnostics. checked for speed signal through ABS sensors, all ABS sensors reading accurately. Followed diagnostics, checked ABS module for dirty terminals, none evident. inspected wiring and noted a lot of aftermarket wiring tapped into ECU and ABS loom. Checked ECU connector for pulse from speed sensor, none evident. Suspect speed pulse not being recieved because of ECU harness wire being tampered with from aftermarket accessories.
-recommend taking to gauge specialist for repair.
Just because a simple speedo wasn't working. It was registering zero when she drove. I personally think, it's just either the cable or the instrument cluster isn't working.

I have a spare 1.6 gearbox from a GSi, what can I give her out of that to repair it? I also have a cable and a speedo cluster I can give her. Would this solve the problem do you think?

Can you just pull that out of the gear box and put it in the sport? It has a 1.6 engine. Or is she going to need the whole gearbox?

it has a 10mm bolt keepin it in, you can just undo that and wiggle it out, but when takin it out pick it up by the nipple bit so it doesnt fall in the box(only rarely happens) you should have to change the box at all, there the same box anyway

Thanks mate, you're a legend! Really appreciate your help, hate seeing people get screwed over for money when it's not necessary. Especially when they are members of our car club!

Haven't seen it myself yet, but from what she's told us, apparently it's cable driven. It's an Australian Holden Barina - 96 sport.

So if its cable driven then why the hell has the garage been checking all the electrics, ecu, and pulse convertors??If its cable your friend has been done over and its probably most likely the cable has snapped.

Well that's the problem! That's why we need to find out whether it was cable or electric. But still, seems like an excessive amount to charge. The holden dealers rip off Barina/Corsa owners here. Mainly because they don't know how to fix them!

Well for a quick check,if the speedo starts at 0mph then its ellecy,if it starts at 10mph its cable driven.
Might be in KMH over theyr im not sure.

Yeah it's KMH over here. But again, that's the problem... so she doesn't know if it starts at zero or ten! Because the speedo doesn't work lol
Is it common over their for the 96 models to be electric? or cable?
