Just after I put the fire out...

Couple of pics of the damage

Bye bye skyline

Right, basically.....
I spoke to the guy at the garage who had a quick look just as i brought it in, and he reckons that it was caused because a) there is no turbo heat shield, b) the rubber hoses above are quite old and brittle, and c) I had been giving the car quite a lot of stick (understandably so seeing as its the first time id driven my new toy )
The turbo got red hot, and then when i stopped at the petrol station obviously there was no air flow through the bonnet to keep it cool, so the heat from the turbo must have melted the breather hoses above, which contained a bit of oil, and those dripped onto the turbo itself and started the fire. If it hadnt have been for the man running into the petrol station telling me my car was on fire, I think things could have been a lot worse, but i sprinted outside, turned the handbrake off and rolled the car away from the pumps, then ran back and got the extinguisher while another guy held the bonnet open for me. Ive been pretty lucky with regards to damage (or at least from wht we can see), it looks like just a few hoses and a section of wire from the lambda sensor will need replacing.
The guy who I bought the car off was a middle aged car enthuiast and I dont think it has been driven all that hard, so it was a mixture of quite a lot of heat in the engine bay combined with brittle hoses that caused it.
Im going to strt looking for a turbo heat shield now, the garage are going to sort the hoses and wiring, so hopefully I will be back on the road in a few days.
Aside from the fire though (a small point ), im absolutely over the moon with the car. I now understand what people were saying about the difference between a corsa with a big engine and a fast car, but the only trouble is you dont realise how fast you are going until you look at the clocks and realise you are doing 120mph
After this experience though, Im thinking about starting a group buy on fire extinguishers for cars if anyone else might be interested? All I can say is thank fuck it happened at a petrol station where they had a means to put the fire out, cos if it happened on the side of the road I dont think my car would still be here now!!

You got lucky there!
Always have to let the turbo cool down by driving off boost for a few miles before parking up

Hallelujah!!
Sounds like it's easily sorted What a bastard...after waiting all weekend with it sat on the drive and not being able to insure it. You're up at the crack of dawn watching the clock waiting to call the insurance and finally get it sorted. You're out in your new motor, big grin on your face, wind in your hair, just buzzing. You pull into the petrol station like the new pimp daddy you are and then your new baby sets on fire OMFG and now you have to wait a few more days. Hard luck, man It'll be worth the wait I'm sure

I love how sympathetic my friends are about my misfortune

Anyway, I rang garage last night and they said they cant get teh engine started, and that they found a couple of live wires so it MAY have affected the ECU but they wont know for sure until they have repaired the fire damage. Hopefully its just cos the wiring from the lambda sensor is fucked, i have to ring again tonight to find out more

Surely a petrol station would be the worst place it could happen and not the best??Was the car at the pump when it caught fire??

worst if not controlled, best in the fact there is equipment to deal with it

Well yes and no, at least they had a fire extinguisher there to put it out. Imagine if it had happened when I got home with the car on the drive, get in and put the tv on, while the car goes up in flames on the drive (and possibly sets fire to teh house, too! ) But yeah, it was at the pump when it happened, I came sprinting out and pushed the car away from the pumps before I even opened the bonnet.

But how can u control a fire when its right next to a petrol pump??All it would have taken was 1 tiny sniff of fuel and boom.
I would much rather it happened elsewhere if it was me.Would rather have my insurance pay out for just my car rather than a whole lot of cars and possibly peoples lives so how any1 can say it happened at the best place is beyond me.
I know it wasnt your fault etc that it happened and id be gutted if it happened to me so dont take the above statement the wrong way.

We had a fire in a bin at a petrol station I used to work in, the fumes in the air aren't rich enough to be ignited really
Edit: Doesn't mean I wasn't running away and screaming like a girl, I shit myself
