Will a 2000 vectra dti estate be good at towing a car on a trailer?

Depends how heavy the load is but for general use then i dont see a problem.

My 1.6 Mini topwns a 3 seater Seadoo Jet-Ski no problem.

As long as you dont over do it, It will be fine.

2.0 is 1300kg, 2.2 is 1500.

Which leaves you with just about enough for the trailer assuming it's a fairly light one as well. You'll be close with the 2 litre.

you'll be quite unstable, but powerwise it'll be ok.

Think long and hard about it....

An LPG V8 classic Range Rover, or a HiLux Surf or something will suit all your needs - be cheap - and loads of room for the rest.

I used a 2000whateverKG range rover to tow very light 205 and corsa around - no snakey moments at all.

The navara with a 1300kg skyline and twin axle trailor (total of about 2000kg maybe) does well, but you can still feel it being a bit 'light' at times

Of course most cars will do it, whether they are safe is another matter.

buy my golf TDi, its got a towbar! (only £800)

My dad towed a fully laden rowing boat tailer (about 1500-2000kg) for about 60miles and it was fine

an old golf is far too light for the combined weight of a car and trailor.

Classic example of this.... R43 GTR being towed by a Stagea....

R34 GTR was 1800kg with spares etc... trailor a good few hundred kg....

end result....

quote:

The weights you need to be aware of is

1) The manufacturers approved towing weight if there is one

2) The KERB weight of your vehicle (normally on a plate fixed to the car ) sometimes called the "mass in service" its the unladen weight of the car

3) The gross weight of the tow car sometimes called the revenue weight, this is the fully laden weight of car.

4) The weight of your load AND the trailer (trailers have plates as well)

5) Maximum train weight which is the gross weight of the tow car plus the trailer and load (again should be on the plate in the car) If the manufacturer doesnt give a train weight then you cannot tow with the vehicle at all eg Ford Ka

5) Nose weight of the trailer this should ideally be 7% of the trailer and load weight

Does your driving licence have the towing bit on it? If not you'll need to do a further test.

As AK and Ian are saying, it just won't be steady enough! Why not buy a cheap assed £300 Transit Van? That'll be more than capable of towing safely.

It will tow it yes, however, will it be safe? If your just doing a one-off tow then you'll be ok. If you're going to track days every weekend then i'd think about something with a little more power. I've towed loads of things with my Astra DTI with no problems but i wasn't driving too far.

A6 2.5 TDI for £900?

The point Steve, is will even an A6 be stable enough? If the car doesn't have much weight behind it (Say, 1400kg) and the car on the trailor weighs 800kg, and the trailer weighs 200kg... If that trailer starts to sway from side to side, the car doesn't weigh much more so what's to stop that from starting to sway too? It needs a bit of weight to stay stable!

From Parkers...... Audi A6 Avant (98-04)
2.5 TDI quattro 5d

Weight 1575 kg - Braked Towing Weight 1900 kg - More than enough.

Failing that i'll just use my Corsa Powar!!!!!
