I've got a few ponds, and we always get loads of natural frogs come for a dip and to lay their spawn.
Over the last 2 weeks, i've had 4 frogs die. We had one die, so I buried him. Only to find when I came home that some cat/Fox had dug up to poor sod. Not only that, but not far away on the grass was another one. Same viewable symptoms.
Next day I came home, only to find yet another frog dead. Same problem.
We've had no frogs since. But the other day, I saw one sitting in the stream.
I went outside last night, only to find what looks like that poor froggie lying also dead.
Frogs seems to be coughing out blood from their mouths, so im sure its an illness and not simply down to cats. We've never had problems before, and gone down from about 8-10 frogs per night to 0
Since which i've found out there's an amphibian epidemic. Theres a fungus that kills all amphibians on the loose called chytrid, and its wiping out populations all the time. They've found a cure but you need to basically "bathe" the frogs, and also dis-infect everything, but this only applies for home pet frogs.
So the only way i can cure this is to heat my pond to 64 degrees for 6+ hours (no chance), or hope that any fungus in my ponds are killed during the winter cold. Its one of those "everywhere, but needs a trigger" killers.
Gutting to find so many frogs dead, and also looks bleak for next years newt population (usually get about 5-15 newts born and survive every year).

Iv got a large pond, mainly filled with koi and ghost carp. I alway get loads of frogs but i havnt seen many at all this year.
Also, how the hell would you heat the pond for 6 hours??

All amphibians (?sp). They think if they can't get a mass cure, we could loose practically all frog and taods withing 30 years
WTF is with that picture?
Baskey, you can, but you can with an internal tank.

get loads of those things that you dip in your coffee mug to heat the water, probably about 100 will do

Surely you could just use a tank heater like you would for a big fish tank?

We had a shit load of spawn in our pont a few months back, we have about 6 large frogs too, now all the spawn has gone and we see the odd baby around the garden when its been raining. God knows what made them ALL leave the pond

Frogs dont live in ponds. They prefer to be out. Usually to cool down, mate, or lay the spawn.
Frogs are a bit like snails in that they love dark damp places to hide.

I guess they were only in the pond to protect the spawn
Happens every year though, we need to clear the pond ready for fish again.

in the house I am doing up there was an old door in the back garden, lifted it up and there must have been 200 tiny frogs under there. Put it back down, (this was about 3 months ago) and lifted it up again today and they have all gone, bloody loads in the garden tho!

We've had loads of frogs this year, all survived that we know of. It must be too cold up north for it

Up north isn't effected as much as south so the reports say.
Also found out the cold winter won't kill the fungal infection, it needs to be high temps.
No more frogs for my garden then Most sad
