AFAIK, you pay the excess and get the remaining pay out (which is the point that the car becomes the property of the insurance company) and then buy it back out of what you get.

Correct.

As said before. My car was insured for 900, insurance offered my 600, excess was 500 (being under 18) and cost 75 to buy back, so was left with £25

Right so they offer me £800 i pay £250 excess which leaves me with £550, then minus £56 to buy it back leaves me £494 then if i sell the wheels springs exhaust stereo and all the shite i have in the garage then i could make a nice little bit of money to put down as a deposit for new car. right??

Is it the best way tbh mate, get everything you want/can of the car, then still weigh it in for more than you bought it back for.
