when they write a song, its going to be massive, even though its simple.

good example is Green Day - Good Riddance. its hardly a musical masterpiece, but everyone knows it, and most love it... just a thought

Richard Ashcroft said he knew when he wrote Bittersweet Symphony it would be a classic.

I'd say they probably have an inkling tbh but can never tell until they perform at a decent sized gig and they can gauge the feedback.

The string section is a Stones song, the rest is The Verve, although the strings make up most of the song!

I don't think the strings are even the stones originally, do they just not own it.

Wikipedia says it was the stones and that was just an orchestra doing them.

Although the song's lyrics were written by Verve vocalist Richard Ashcroft, it has been credited to Keith Richards and Mick Jagger because the song uses the Andrew Oldham Orchestra recording of The Rolling Stones' 1965 song "The Last Time" as its foundation.

Originally, The Verve had negotiated a license to use a sample from the Oldham recording, but it was successfully argued that the Verve had used 'too much' of the sample.[4] Despite having original lyrics, the music of "Bitter Sweet Symphony" is largely based on the Oldham track (the song uses the sample as its foundation and then builds upon, though the continuous riff is Ashcroft's creation), which led to a lawsuit with ABKCO Records, Allen Klein's company that owns the rights to the Rolling Stones material of the 1960s. The matter was eventually settled, with copyright of the song reverting to ABKCO and songwriting credits to Jagger and Richards.

“ "We were told it was going to be a 50/50 split, and then they saw how well the record was doing," says band member Simon Jones. "They rung up and said 'we want 100 per cent or take it out of the shops', you don't have much choice."[5] ”

After losing the composer credits to the song, Richard Ashcroft commented, "This is the best song [Mick] Jagger and [Keith] Richards have written in 20 years."

bands / artists know when they're on to something - failing that, the only reason they get signed and promoted is because someone somewhere knows they have hot songs.

although, technically, they did rip off a song to write The Last Time, by the staple singers. useless knowledge ftw

if your writing a song to get a "hit" then your in it for the wrong reasons imo

music should be about the performance and having fun

everything else is just a bonus

The whole Verve and the Rolling Stones thing was a waste of time, it was Andrew Oldham (previous bands manager) that did the orchestral cover (LISTEN) and i don't think he got a penny from The Verve sampling it.
Instead you had the robbing bastards ABKCO realise that it was doing stupidly well and making a shed load of cash, so they wanted, not just a slice of the pie, but the whole lot

Back to topic, i think bands know it'll do alright (playing new material during gigs etc) but i don't think they know how successful until it hits the mainstream charts and they get reactions back from the public, rather than just fans.
