What would you have. for around £1000
Clean 205 1.9 GTI or a well used 106 GTI (1.6 16V)?

to be honest, I can't see you getting a 'working' 106 gti for £1000.
You may be lucky and get a Saxo VTS for £1000.
In my opinion, both a 106 gti / VTS will need a little bit of money spent to make them really any good on track... For example brake pads - Ferodo DS2500's , maybe upgrade shocks / springs (although you could technically take it standard), maybe breathing mods exhaust / filter.
You could probably find a 205 Gti 1.9 with all the bits on it for £1000 (although it'll probably also be a dog).
Don't be so tight and spend £1500-£2000 Then you'll get something fairly decent and probably already sorted (saves money buying parts for it later).

saxo vts are easy to pick up, two of mates have brought them one for £600 and engine done by jam sports, cams exhaust the lot, but has done 129k on miles, but another mate brought totally standard, mint condition, 76k on the clock, £1200

Gearbox like a chocolate teapot though.
I'd go with the 205, then an Astra GTE, purley bang for buck.
