Or if you're more cunning, like on my item there at 1750, you would bid 18000 then withdraw the bid saying the amount was wrong, then go back in at 1800. You'll see what the max proxy was while you were up at your blag bid, which will usually mean losing it when you go back in legitimately.
Only problem with that is you cant retract a bid with less that 12 hours left.

on certain things i always ask if they have a buy it now price, if they dont come back with a price and tell me to make an offer then i just watch the auction and bid accordingly.
if you dont ask you dont get!
I do that too.
The buyer may think that the offer is a good offer & end the auction early for you, which is good becuase someone else might be willing to pay much more than your offer & if you just put your offer into the auction you'd lose.
Also, with EBay now that you cant leave negative feedback for buyers, if I really want something i'll put in a stupid bid (something like £1,000,000) then see what the price ends up at. If its a price im happy to pay, I pay, if not I just ignor all contact from the seller, & they eventually re-list
another plus point for asking for a buy it now price , for the seller at least, is that if they start an auction at 0.99p, and you get in there, ask for a buy it now price and they say £60 including postage, then they can end the auction, sell to the highest bidder, and adjust the postage cost to £59.01 meaning that the selling fees they pay is only applicable to the 0.99p winning bid, as i dont think you pay fees on postage costs.
