Ive seen some people drive about with the front numberplate resting on the dash behind the windscreen. Is this illegal? Dont know what to do with mine when driving to and from a track. I suppose only other option is a vinyl plate which I know are illegal but less obvious.

i drove without one on for a while, went past a few police car's and nothing happeneded.
but it's all down to the police officer i guess.
as far as i know, and from what i remembe of the last number plate thread which steve got involved in, you can put it in the windscreen if it's clearly visible.
but.. most windscreens have factory tint on them or anti glare stuff so could disguise the plate.

Illegal. numberplates must be attached "securely" to the OUTSIDE of the vehicle.

don't they have to be at a certain angle to vertical as well, or have i imagined that?
ie. outside of windscreen would be OK, but bonnet top no good.

I didnt have a front numberplate on my old Split Screen camper, because it wasnt a standard item when new, it didnt require one, neither did it have seat belts, fog light, reversing light etc etc
Got stopped a few times and let off coz I had the paperwork proving the technicalities.

Someone i know of had theirs in the wind screen, and got told to remove it as it was creating an obstruction.
