Long short story sideways...
Had a phone call from dept collectors saying i owed Elephant insurance money. She said she has sent a letter all about it, but was phoning to have a word. I explained that i have proof (a certificate from another insurer) that i don't owe the money. She said fair enough, stick that in the post and we'll sort it out.
My mum who is ill and has very little money opened the letter from dept collectors, worried and put a cheque in the post to them. She has just told me and i explained that its sorted and i don't owe the money
Now she says "will they give it back? "

Can you cancel the cheque? or has it been banked?
get in touch with debt collectors and explain the situation? using the dates on the cheque/cert as proof?

Phone the bank, cancel the cheque & give your mum a slap for reading your mail & going behind your back!
