What can cause the outside of the sump to be covered in oil? It didnt look like it had dripped to much on the driveway.

sump gasket, timing belt gasket, basically any of the seals on the engine as the oil will make its way down to the sump before droping

I've got the same problem on my car atm, it likely its the sump gasket, also it could be a rocker gasket as the oil will drip down the engine, like John said.

its not the seals and gaskets that are costly, its the labour, as they will charge you for about 8 hours labour. as they will find the cause trip the part/engine down, replace the part, put the engine back together, then they like to run the call up to temperature and leave it running for a while to make sure its stil not leaking
