I think my chainset is broken, the pedal arm came off the other day, and had loads of play in it, i screwed it back on, but comes loose really quickly.
I think im going to have to replace it, what is a good upgrade for it. I have a Giant Yukon, which is a basic hardtail cost about £300.
I use it to get around everywhere on, mainly roads & pathways. If im going to get a new chainset, was thinking what other upgrades could i do, which are fairly cheap.
Im going to get some new semi slick tyres for it, anyone recommend any?

bet you've got a ISIS bottom bracket.
bin the sod, get an external BB and some shimano hollowtech cranks.

for urban use i'd suggest Halo twin rail tyres
what are your pedals like? Poop plastic ones? Get some SPD pedals on a hardtail and shoes with cleats

I have never had a problem with isis in all the years I have had it. Although they are middleburns so quite good ones.
Best thing will be a fresh crankset and bottom bracket and just make sure they are checked every so often to make sure they are tight. (usually loosen off after they are first used after fitting) Once they are loose it fucks up the taper and they will keep coming loose after that.
Really depends on what your budget is as to what you get?

ISIS are good fact, all of the trials riders use them and as said midle burns are good cranks.
The reason the crank is getting lose it due to the teeth inside the crank arm becoming warn, havent got masses of knowledge into which cranks are good for your type of bike.
But after reading your original post there is no need to buy an external crankset or a top of the range BB, middle range stuff will cater for your needs easily.
