I've got an S2 (selling in a month!). They are not the same engine as VTR, S2's slightly different, have 105 bhp. Nice and torquey compared to the S1. Easily tuned and respond well. Lots of parts available, cams throttle bodies, exhausts etc.
Handling wise....they're a 106, so pretty good.

if you like comforts go for the gti, ive looked at alot of gti's and rallye convos and overall the 16v seems to win... and aparently easier to get better results etc.. and you start of with a bit more power... but.... a s1 rallye with a 16v conversion would be porn!!!

s1 16v is porn...no doubt, but fugly
s2 rallye is "rare" apparently but gtf they are everywhere too and yes 8v tuning is alot more available but still not half as 'gainful' as 16v
i've had 2 gti's and loved them, 15bhp more than the rallye but breathing mods such as BMC CDA or PANEL FILTER etc, 4-2-1, PUGSPORT. and your at 135/140bhp cam for 150+ but not cheap.
def get the gti and strip it if you want the "rallye" experience with a proper engine.
p.s 16v is for men, 8v's for girls

the rallye is 8v
the GTi is 16v so is designed to be faster and more sporty,
i wouldnt bother with 106owners i find if you havent been on there for a few years there just ignore you and make pointless posts about who would win in a race them or another user (that was the club chairmans post)
Also as of tommrow it will becoming a paying only site.
But they all hump the rallye bandwagon tbh, but i dont understand why
