is the diesel engine (90bhp TDI) in the mk3 golf, the same as the ones in the newer golfs/fabia/ibiza etc?

Depends which models your refering to?

Base models use the same engine but the sports version use the pd engine

The 90 bhp engine is the AHU engine in the mk3.

I know the 110, 115,130,150 GT TDIs are PD engines

AHU was used in alot of things, but not newer things.
