Not hundred percent how it works but my Dad's car was first registered in 96, it's had about 8 different private plates on, and I think at some point when someone has took their private plate off, the original plate that was on the car wasn't available so it got re-registered and if he was to take his private plate off it'd go to an X plate cos it was re-registered in 2001. Suppose it has some pro and some cons, car looks newer etc, but try arguing to an insurance company that it's a 96 model, not a 2001. The difference for my Dad was a couple of hundred quid

If a private plate comes off, it goes back on another age related plate of the same year.
If the age cannot be determined it goes on a Q plate.
Quite how you get an 04 plate for an 01 car I've no idea. I wouldn't buy it.

Rear is different etc, looks dodgy and I wouldn't touch it but it's a proper shame cos' it's a looker!

Rear looks different because it has some kind of diffuser and black/carbon boot lid spoiler.
However, it doesn't look like an '04 car because if anyone knew their BMW's, they'd know it should have LED rears.
I'd steer clear imho.

My mk1 Golf was a D registered 82 plate. 82 would make it a suffixed Y plate.
DVLA fucked up and got it wrong with mine.

That Kitamo rear splitter is extremely rare. My dad had one for his, realised what it was worth and went on ebay.. got over £800 for it.
Edit : no help at all, sorry

Never heard of that, I was under the impression an imported vehicle was appointed a plate that shows its age.

My dad bought a '92 Range Rover from ireland. When he got it, it had an L plate ('94) on it.
I'm sure that BMW is legit. Otherwise he'd just advertise it as a 2004 car, destroy the pervious service history and ask for 2004 money.
