Right i know they are a rover in drag. I know that the 1.4 has a headgasket problem! I think the interior is cheap...

But i seem to want one....How shit are they?

interior is CHEAP, my mate has one, just seems to squeek and rattle. Nothing special. My polo is just as quick and built better

You've pretty much listed all the reasons not to buy one.

my mate has a mg zr 1.4, yeah its a big new metro but brilliant cars for what they are in my eyes, standard have great handling, looks good, only thing that my mate has a problem with is how much they seem to drink fuel

My mate had a 214 and I'd say the same about that.

The 1.4's use more petrol than a normal 1.4 because they went more for power than efficiency, so you'll get less mpg, but you get just over 100bhp standard.

And then of course there's the K-series headgasket problem.

Other than that they're an alright car

Oh, the clutch is cable and pretty heavy btw.

Interior is really cheap, my mate has one and it always creaks and rattles, you can see straight into the glovebox when its fully closed, the windows are stiff, i could go on all day about how crap these cars are!

If you fit a freelander HG then its a problem solved apparently.

As for the rest....

never heard of a block being knackered from a headgasket blow.. maybe the head if left long enough.

I had the ZR 1.8 160VVC best car ive driven.. chassis was spot on so was suspension, seats were comfy.. engine pulled well and sounded real nice... was an ace car standard.

Headgasket went cost me 300 quid to have a freelander HG with a 12month warrenty from MG Tech in birmingham. Drivers window had a loose connection.. so took the panel off and re-crimped it...

hardly the end of the world lol..

bargain for the price i payed.. wouldnt know much about the 1.4 though.. although get the highest power and + spec you can afford is my advice.

Oh and those who genuinely slate them really badly have probably never driven one. (as for tarted up or in drag etc... MG is a rover tuning company? thats what they do?)

A friend has just purchased a 2005 facelift 1.8 120 bhp one! I went in it, expecting it to handle like a boat bieng and bit hatch, and it didnt roll at all!

Didnt have much low down power, but once at 5k seemed to pull pretty hardcore.

And i like how they look

dooohhhh!

seats are a v good design i feel, and they are a reasonable drive, however sometimes they feel a bit...bland, the drivers pillar is a silly blind spot, and the most annoying thing? having the top of your hair rubbing on the roof slightly(ok mine had a sunroof) but it annoyed me! reasonably well built and they feel quite well built inside despite people disagreeing, the glovebox feels like a plastic lunchbox on hinges too.they do seem to drink fuel though, if you go for one I would say try to get an earlyish one or a uber late one, they had a cutback in 02 i think where the dash and doorcards and other parts were slightly crapper plastic, texture was niceish but screams cheap at me sunroof seals go and they can leak,HGF is a big worry among men but not as huge a problem as you think.
