Some woman bled to death in the middle of the street after the stitches in her neck came open, two days after an operation to have a tumor removed. Poor woman

Probably, but if you cut the right bit of your neck (i.e. your Jugular) open your body will relieve itself of all of it's blood in a matter of minutes.

With a reasonable amount of pressure, you could occlude the jugular vein completely until help ( & forceps!) arrive... preventing massive blood loss & death. Messy tho!

People die this way relatively often, though usually due to accidental trauma!
