How do you find it compared to Permanent work?
I'm willing to work in London and enjoy change of work as it keeps me motivated.
Any major cons?

I did it for a bit.
Cons:
No career progression
No bonuses/benefits
No paid holiday
No paid sick leave
Usually get less respect than permanent employees
Rarely at a company long enough to make good friends etc
Pros:
Money

The guy who I work with does exactly the same job and is on over twice my salary as he is a contractor!

another con is you have no job security, they can normally fuck you off with very very small notice.

Yeah forgot that one, that's quite a big one. TBH you need a lot of experience to be successful in contracting.
Companies take on contractors because they want someone who can do the job, they don't care if you run the local stamp club or do charity work etc, all they care about is how many years experience you have in the role.

I reckon in the roles Alex is mentioning (support) he may well find it quite hostile with other staff, if he was doing project work for example (heres the spec, go do it) then it wouldnt be so bad imo.
Contractor may be getting more but remember hes got costs to sort out, tax forms to fill out, companies to pay if hes under an umbrella and stuff... theres alot more to it then OMG CONTRACTOR MAD MONEYS

No pension
IR35 will often wipe out any tax benefits you think you may get

Not necessarily, there are things you can do to increase your chances of not getting hit by IR35.

I work in a school so contract myself out for the holidays, usually to the same company mind so not as bad as changing companies week in week out!
More ££,£££ by far
No gurantees of work,
Not there long enough to get familliar with their systems, setups
I couldn't do it full time, too much hard work finding work, I'd rather take a pay cut and be in the same place day in day out!
Not having the extra stresses

Is that definite? Have you actually sat down and worked out both pays after holidays, etc.
He may get paid more an hour, but i'm betting with sick pay, holiday pay, benefits, you're more than likely equal.
Contracting is only great for people who love to put mega hours in, are never sick and never go on holiday.

Doesnt matter mate, experience is key, hes got double the amount of experience than you hence his pay, plus hes older and possibly (possibly) got more financial commitments to meet than you.
Could you hack the commute into the city? its shit

My aunt and uncle live in Zone 3 South London. I'd sty there Mon-Fri.
He reckons he could hook me up with some contracting jobs paying a nice wage so its something I'm seriously thinking about doing.
