Because this happened.

The repair bill, which went through insurance was £1800. With my excess of £450ish, it naturally took the cost for the insurance company down to £1350. Yet the car, STILL WASN'T written off.
I just found a Seat Ibiza TDi on eBay (also on AutoTrader) that had similar parts replaced and was classed as a Cat D write off, so now it has history, yet the car is worth considerably more.
Thinking back, I'm just quite amazed how it wasn't written off. May be it was something to do with I had just washed, hoovered it etc the day before, so was looking relatively good
What's more, my insurance renewal with another company was £280 less than the previous year, with a claim worth £3200 (including the 3 party's).
Having just turned over the 80k mark, the car is still going strong and I haven't had any problems since getting it with 59k on in August 2006.
I think I got a good'un

Wash and hoover your car before you crash it and it'll never be written off.

I'm just astonished how the car wasn't written off, considering the real market value of the car.
Then a much more expensive car in terms of market value is written off.
I was lucky in the sense that 2 weeks later I had the car back, and it isn't classed as Cat D or C.

Fuck that, claim! I doubt your premium would go up more than £600 anyway.

Well, I paid £1800 for the car and after excess if I got a pay out, I'd have only had £1350, so I went for the repair.
Not that I was given the option.

Pretty much. All genuine GM parts. Add to that a top grill, fluids, painting, labour certified insurance repairer, all done through the insurance.
The recovery truck picked me and the car up, taken to repair centre, car left there, and I drove away in a courtesy car.
