One for my uncle.

Anyone know if he has his (£440 a year under new tax laws) 3.0 Jag converted to LPG, will he qualify for lower tax?

Had a quick google but nothing jumps out.

Shouldn't think so.

Only get cheaper fuel/better economy.

Tell him to ditch it.

Fair enough. Does LPG lose any performance?

If so, it'd be pretty pointless - plus the outlay of the LPG conversion, then time it takes to actually start saving, baring in mind it's his weekend car.

If he gets a reduced tax, he can pay for it with that, and the fact that LPG is half the price.

You dont loose any power really, couple of bhp. My mate has it done in his vectra V6. Cost £1800 to do. Would be worth while if you were doing high miles.

For cars registered after 1st March 2001, car/road tax, or Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), is charged according to a vehicle's carbon dioxide and fuel type. CO2 figures are submitted by the vehicle manufacturer and recorded on the vehicle logbook. A vehicle manufacturer will register the lower figure for their LPG cars. No changes after registration are permitted even if the car is subsequently converted to run on LPG.

However, for those cars registered after 2001and converted to run on LPG, owners who submit the appropriate documentation (e.g. LPGA conversion certificate to the DVLA can request that the taxation class is changed to 'Alternative Fuel Car' and will then be eligible for a standard reduction on VED.

Have a look at the DVLA website www.dvla.gov.uk/newved.htm for more information on how vehicles are banded according to their emissions, and the VED rates applied.

Yes , you do get cheaper road tax.

The car must be registered as 'duel fuel' with the doovla and be fitted by a certified dealer and insured for LPG.

Our Range Rover is LPG and it looses no power, runs smoother and runs better from cold.

I can't believe people are saying you don't loose power from lpg its a proven fact that you do. Obviously its going to be less noticeable on a more powerful car but the difference on our astra van and customers citroen vans is very noticeable especially if you are carrying any weight!

Having converted cars to lpg and run the van for a couple of years now i wouldn't recommend it especially not for a weekend car.
