my mates have told me that if i do it right i can get the same quality from spraying my bumpers with a rattle can (using plastic primer and everything of course) as i can if i took it a spray shop is this true? because if so im going to do it

Depends on what.
As long as you take your time it can look good.
But no, it will never look as good as proper compressor and spray gun.

No chance, you could maybe do a good job but it would involve alot of sanding, dust free and warm environment etc...
If you want it perfect get it done properly, if your happy with a half-assed job - go for it
