well i wud say about 5k, and for my car id say £1500/£2000....
when i got it, it had 30,000 miles, and cost £2500..
now its at 41,000 miles

And wheres the best place 2 get alloys and new springs ?

I paid about your budget for this:
2003 polo tdi sport. has the VW bodykit, nicer interior, rear spolier, VW alloys and makes 148 bhp and 270 ft/lb torque. 46mpg, dirt cheap to insure and so much fun.

local lad selling it. had it since new and spent silly aounts on it, even bought the wheels and tyres from VW for almost £1k and had them supply and fit the bodykit which cost over £2k 
buid quality and the size inside it are just fantastic. twice as much room and twice as much fun as my old corsa 1.8 that I sold to buy this.
