was away in Birmingham over the weekend for a stag do, and parked my car in the underground car park at the travelodge we stayed at.

Got back to it on Yesterday morning, and someone's kicked in the windscreen.
Thought it was just vandalism at first, but it looks like they took a couple of bits from the cabin too. Stereo face was in the centre console which is now gone, but they didn't manage to get the unit out of the dash, despite snapping my office key in half trying

There was a mates bag full of clobber in the back which wasn't taken, so it seems a bit random. They've stood on the bonnet and must have given the screen a right good kicking to get all the way through that way. Not easier to smash a side window?
Anyway the bonnet has some scratches and a quite deep gouge from glass shards being worked into it, as does the n/s front wing. They'd also half pulled down a strip light from the car park roof that they were no doubt swinging from to get more kick ?

Called insurance company who are going to come and collect the car for assessment. Might be written off, because it's only worth a grand. ('94 325 saloon).

Need to get a crime reference number tonight, and spoken with the car park operators to see about getting cctv, but need to write in.

Pics to follow, but do you think they'll write it off?
damagae:
windscreen fucked
stereo face plate missing
dented and scratched bonnet
scrathed wing.

tbh i'm hoping so if i get the option to buy it back again.
How does that work also? i presume it can be discussed at the time in the event of a total loss?

Windscreen will probably be £50 on your excess and paint will be a few hundred to go over the scratched panels.

I don't have glass cover, but as this was vandalism and theft, i could claim.
Up to £150 cover for radio, £200 excess.

They'll probably look at replacing the bonnet and screen, and re-painting the wing.

wouldn't be surprised if that added up to £600-700, in which case it'll probably be uneconomical for them to repair.

If i can buy it back, i'll just replace the screen and carry on about my business.

Out to take some snaps now.

Not being funny, but is it worth the trouble claiming?

I have protected no claims, so wont be an issue.
I had debated whether to bother or not, but this is just the reason why we pafor insurance, so i might as well use it.

plus if it works out like i'm expecting, they'll just give me a cheque for say £700-800, and i'll still have the car.
makes it worthwhile if it happens as i invisage.

what bothers me more is wtf it happened, i don't know anyone in Brum apart from the people we were with, and i'm certainly not the kind of person to go around making enemies.

some pics:

Odd window to break to rob a stereo

There was a car in my mum & dads street with windows panned in on Sunday morning. Bottles all over the road aswell, I vaugly remember seeing kids going into a house with carry out bags on the Saturday night. Should go round say something tbh

I wouldnt bother claiming, its a 94 BMW saloon, not worth a great deal at that. My insurance DOUBLED when I claimed last year. I had protected NCB also. Id just replace the windscreen & take it on the chin that you've been had over!

How do they justify that?
Did you claim for damage or an accident?

Would still just about be worth it for the first year if it doubled, but that does suck some arse. plus recurring years after that etc....

I've already arranged collection now, so it's too late, but we'll see the outcome.

nah, Called AA, who referred me to Autoglass.
Autoglass had no stock until Tuesday.
Then called every glazier in Birmingham. Sunday afternoon, so no-one wants to work even if they can get the screen.
Told AA they had to take me back. They offered 10 miles. I told them to GTF and spoke to someone more senior, who eventually agreed they had a duty of care towards me.

Took 2 flatbeds to get me home with a switch at Cherwell Valley because the first guy had done too many miles on his tacho, but eventually made it. Had to drive it onto the truck a couple of times which was a bit prickly, but couldn't have taken it at any speed.

Cheers Colin, I'll speak with them tomorrow to see how bad the news is.

Double locking?
They could still have got in the side window (much) easier, so i'm not sure that's the reason.

Hopefully if i can get hold of the cam footage, it might reveal some more about the whole situation.

Ant, this was in the underground car park of the Travelodge on Broad Street.

I was quite impressed with the security wandering about Broad Street, but the car park backs onto Tenant Street behind the hotel, so they probably wouldn't have seen or heard anything.

Just relying on the car park operators to have some good footage really.
