Just got a cal from a guy at AA..
he was basically explaining how this warrenty stuff works.. and wondered if anyone had it..
If anything goes wrong on your car you take it to any garage you want, they call the garage speak to the mechanics and the AA pay the garage directly..
Whats Covered:
Engine
GearBox
Cooling Systems
Wheel Bearings
Electrical Systems
Clutch (i did mention this was a wearing part but they said it was inc)
Suspension
Plus More
Now for the Warrenty its a 30 day contract with initial deposit of 1months. (pay a month in advance)
so each month its £17.46 but you have to get it to a garage. but if you take there breakdown cover at £55.99 per year (should be £149) then they can transport it anywhere you want. Also covers you for a curtesy car while yours is being fixed.
now 1 or 2 things bothered me..
Q. if you have modified parts like suspension and they go will they replace like for like..
A. they will replace back to standard without hassle. but may replace like for like depends on garage and how much they like you.
Q. if you have a mod that causes a problem, home made flywheel that breaks through your gearbox or whatever..
A. they will replace back to standard.
so it sounds like a pretty good deal to me... but im abit 'too good to be true' atm.
per month it would cost just over £21.00 with the first month costing you double.
deposits and all mony is fully refundable up to your 14day grace period.
Its called the 'Free Start Exclusive' but i cant find that on their site, just 3star, 5star and gold cover.
OOh forgot to mention...
There is a £50 excess on each trip to the garage, and they will pay UP TO £1500 to sort the problem and then the price of your car is a limit per year.
so.. for example.. mine is worth £10k so i could go in as many times as i wanted aslong as the bill didnt go over that in a year.. if it went over £1500 any time i went in i would be billed for the remaining amount.
i could effectivly go in 6 times over the year with the bill at 1400 per time and i would of paid £300 for the excess.

Sounds a little to good to be true tbh. how old has your car got to be before it wont be covered or mileage etc

i think i might take it up because.. there is the same sort of thing on the site, and i know the timing chain will be going at about 40k ish and the clutch will no doubt be buggered by then
and i can get it delivered to TMS or Courney and they can fix it..

to be fair, it sounds way to good to be true, so i throw a conrod through the block due to having a silly big turbo and they pay for it all for a 50 quid excess ?

Surely normal wear and tear isn't covered, only unexpected failures or whatever?

well i did ask him and he was adamant that it was covered.. but i did tell himn iwas going to read it all first and let him know.
the only thing i questioned was clutch but he said they have been included to be covered aswell.

Thats rediculous.
TBH the price seems great, but I can see it all going wrong when you come to claim. Get him to supply you with a written list of items covered and under what circumstances.

My mate has had this in the past i.e. it's been around for yonks.
He had his Head gasket go on an Astra and it was replaced and head skimmed for £50. But in those days they were strict about the 10 year old/100,000 mile limit.
Looking at their site, they now cover older/higher mileage vehicles for £20 extra per year.

T&Cs "What is not covered"
2. General maintenance and Components failing due to Wear and Tear
Couldn't they just use that as a get-out for anything?

When I bought a car from a dealer quite a few years back I got a very similar warranty from the AA on a 60 day free trial. after about 20 days the alternator packed up, they wouldnt replace it under the warranty as an alternator has parts that naturally wear as its effectively a motor and the smallprint they gave me was huge. The dealers fixed it free of charge in the end.
then not long after the car stalled and wouldnt start again, turned out it was the clocks, there was some part in there that kills the whole cars electrics, they wouldnt do it under their warranty (smallprint again) and the dealers fitted new clocks free of charge.
my experience with this type of warranty was a bit poo.
