Out of curiosity how many miles a year are you doing? I was all set for getting a 1.9 CDti astra until I sat down and figured out it'd cost me an extra £40 odd quid a month to run a VXR - that's doing about 1000 miles a month! Suppose it depends where your priorities lie really, but for me i'd rather pay the extra in fuel and live with a car i really wanted, than somthing that came second best.
On average about 850 miles a month.

850 miles a month isnt that much, thats just over 10,000 miles a year. I was doing 2000 a month before I jumped on the Diesel bandwagon
If I had c.10-12k id be looking for a BMW 320d Ci

One of these - http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/BMW+3+SERIES/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-41-51-58-171-4294967201-4294967202/advert.action?R=200751300801368&distance=352&postcode=fk3+9ar&channel=CARS&make=BMW&model=3+SERIES&min_pr=&max_pr=14000&max_mileage=60000
I was wanting one but didnt fancy sticking my hand deeper in to the pockets for something im going to use & abuse & rack up a whole load of miles!

Doesn't seem enough to warrant changin to derv TBH if it's purely the price of fuel you're bothered about. Suppose it depends how much you're bothered about spending money on fuel really, or bothered about the extra performance .
