my aunties car was having her mot done at the local vw garage, in mind she has an old golf, not sure what reg but its done 89k and had one cam belt change at 20k by previous owner for some reason,

during the emissions test the cam belt snapped, she rang me because they said it would be over £1,000 bill..i then asked her did they ask her if the vechle is in good condition and am i right in saying they have to ask when the cam belt was changed last or something along them lines...she said no

am i right in saying that its down to the mot tester make sure its in good condition? and vw have to pay the bill for the vechle to be repaired?

thanks

yeah they only really check the cambelt condition on diesels as they are revved to the limiter up to 6 times so it has to be good.

they should be checked on petrols aswel, if there is any doubt then the test should be abandonned

Pretty sure the customer has to sign a form at my work to say they give their permission for it to be revved so high. I was never asked when mine went in though

there not testing the engine on the mot there checking its safe/condition of body ect you also can never tell if a cambelt is going it could go after ten mins or 10 years i say its nothing to do with the garage it would have gone on her if it was not in there for its mot

I would say its her problem tbh. Might have been different had it been on a diesel.
