..can stretch to more if i want to, but would like not to have to.

I've done the whole tart up cars thing for a couple of years now, grown out of it.

I've got £4k to spend (ish) and these are the sorts of cars i've been looking at..

Ford Focus 2.0 Zetec
Vauxhall Astra SRi (MK4)

So, mid-sized hatch.

I dont want mega mileage (around 60k would do nicely) and i don't really want/need anything faster (keeping costs down which includes insurance). I'd like it to be no more than 8 years old, so 2000+.

Suggestions?

Phil

Mk 4 Golf Gti 2.0? Will be older and more miles that the focus/Astra though.

The Mk 4 SRi's with the 16"s and kit on are smart looking cars in my opinion .

2.0 GTi is dire.

mk4 Astra SRi I reckon, they're very good cars for the money.

Yup they're slow (Gnats Cock in it performance wise between one of them and a 1.4 16v corsa!). Only thing that would make me sway towards them is I know of a few people who've had that engine and had trouble with it. Having a turbo is just having something else (bloody expensive too in this case) to go wrong, or need replacement.

The work horse at work is a 1.8t passat with 240k + miles on it. Hardly unrealiable with a turbo tbh

Not keen on the Golfs really, wouldn't mind a 1.8T but insurance, again, is a little on the expensive side. That coupled with the fact a GTi looks no different to a 1.4 doesn't exactly help it light my fire.

Starlet, Civic VTi and ITR are also silly on insurance really (when i say silly, i mean £2k+).

Seems to be either the Astra or the Focus at the moment...
