whats the method called where instead of mandrel bending the pipe smaller sections are welded together to form the bend?.
and whats the pro's over this compared to mandrel bending.

whats the advantages of this? i understand it helps keep a uniform flow, but surely the penetrating welds resttrict the internal dia?

Dont worry bout it!
Well not a clue what advantages are in the of gas flow, but i doubt the weld penitration will cause it to restrict, your only talking 1mm at the most. Nothing noticable!
Only thing i can think off, its easy to fab up if tight bends are needed!

ive noticed that its mainly only high spec cars which use them, very rarely see them on a fast road car etc..
just wondering what the advantages were.
