As you may or may not know, I have spent the past week changing engines over. I purchased a new engine from a local Vauxhall breakers, and was told he had it all running with no problems, as he does with all his engines before breaking them.
Well now that it's all in, I've discovered the head gasket has gone on the engine, despite him saying it was fine.
I rang up and explained it all, and he said he can either swap the engine for another one, but that means un-doing everything and having to start from scratch, and there's no guarentee anymore that the new engine is any better.
Alternatively he said he can offer £50 back.
But considering the amount of hours/money it'd take to do the head gasket, never mind the amount of hours it'd take to change engines, I don't really find any of these reasonable. My Dad reckons I should ask for £50 plus the parts I need to change the head gasket.
I'm a bit stuck really, I was counting on having this back as it makes getting to work and home again so much harder and it's more expensive than driving.

take to another garage and get them to do the head gasket or take it to him and have him change the headgasket then take to another garage to have it checked

Did you get a receipt as 'in running order' or 'sold as seen'?
If you got an 'in running order' receipt, you have every right to go to Trading Standards or someone like that imho.

There was no receipt, but he said it does have warranty.
Something I didn't think of, was getting a quote from a local garage who I trust, and getting the company to pay for it.

If you need the parts to do it I may be able to sort those out for you mate
but yes, I would get a quote from a garage and explain to him that £50 would not solve the problem

Yeah, got a mate doing it Sunday hopefully, gonna ring up and see but as far as receipts and trading standards go, I don't stand a chance. Don't forget about the cam belt too, needs replaced as the old one will have to come off to get the head off, so another £20.
