You use fuel when coasting as the clutch is engaged so the engine used fuel to tick over, what steve means is when youtake your foot off the accelerator and roll up to (aroundabout etc) providing you havent touched the clutch the wheels turn the engine and you use no fuel

coast in gear and it's 999mpg, coast in neutral and it's about 100mpg, so when clutch is disengaged it uses petrol to make the car tick over, not forward momentum to keep everything moving. the end

Those MPG trip computers that change wildly with every throttle movement are hopeless One minute it'll say 30MPG then you take your foot off the throttle and it changes to 100MPG.

I prefer to use the average MPG for the journey function, much more accurate than the instant MPG ones.

yep in gear traveling along you take your foot off the throttle the Butterfly valve will close right off, injectors will go to 0% duty and the engine will be turning over purely through the turning of the wheels until a point there isnt enough load the the engine will try and idle using fuel.

of course this isnt true of anything with a carb
