There was a Dutch guy on C4 news that had been away on business in China, so he speaks pretty good English, and would probably fly a lot.

He said there wasn't a sound of the engines cutting out i.e. the plan gliding in, so the fact it glided as far as C4 news stated is highly unlikely tbh.

He also said it just felt like a rough landing, nothing more seemed strange.

No-one can really say until the black boxes (which 2 are in fact orange on the 777) are found.

tbh, if black boxes are indestructible, why isn't the whole plane a black box?

Groan, because that would make it far too heavy.

I heard that Dutch guy, kept misunderstanding the questions. I'm sure the engines would coast without fuel so you wouldn't really hear the point of failure.

Need to get on PPRUNE really and get some proper info but the server is unsurprisingly busy!

They also had an expert in the C4 studio. He said it takes quite a while to receive some chips from the black boxes, because they have to be strongly built. He then paused, and then said "to withstand impact when hitting mountains"

another point to remember is the engines spin over at what 22000+ rpm they wont just stop like a car engine will

I did consider this as well. Plus, if it's going through the air, they'll be spinning.
