thinking of getting a new car when my insurance is up.
ive done 23thousand miles in my corsa since march this year, i do town driving starting and stoping and a few miles on the motorway every day upto my girlfriends.
was just wondering what are these engines are like in the astras? on the motorway mpg etc? im not expecting it to be the fastest thing in the world but want it to cope on the motorway etc.

i get about 270-300 miles out of a full tank out of my 1.4 sport

me and my mum both have the 1.8 16v engine
Get about 40 to the gallon around town if you drive sensibly
not sure about the 1.6 but can't be that bad

same engine as the 1.6 corsa, with an even shitter inlet, and a more restrictions. get the 1.8. i think you'l find the difference in insurance wont be huge

1.6 mk4's are awful.
You would be better with a bigger engine such as the x20xev engined mk4 astra and you would probably get more economy. My old MK3 x20xev used to do 35 to the gallon on mixed use driving, and only ever got as low as 28 when being a bit more enthusiastic with the throttle.

I would go for either the 2.0 or the 2.2, anything else isnt really worth bothering with!

Exactly. Who would want a 2.2 if you doing 23,000 miles every 9 months? .
Something like the 2.0 DTI sounds ideal to me.

We have one of these to use as an everyday car. Its not particularly quick but its not as bad as I expected tbh. Its really nice to drive & I get about 250-280 miles to a tank but thats mostly back roads or short trips in & out of town. Over xmas we filled it up & got nearer 300 miles using it on longer trips which were mostly dual carriageway

In my Astra (2.0 DTI) i do 360 miles to a tank. I have once done just over 400 miles, but that was from the very top of Ireland - Scotland (troon) - home.
On the motorway i get better MPG at 90 than at 70. So if you have a heavy right foot then you'll be ok.

worth rembering tha there are 2 1.6 engines in the mk4 the 8v and the 16v. The 8v isnt really worth buying, the 1.4 16v would be better. So make sure its the 16v engine and it will do you fine.

z16xe astra g's are good cars with good engines and a much shorter and simpler inlet system, i would just go for a 1.6 i have one roughly 35-40 mpg and it performs vey well considering its engine size, they're nice cars and an ideal upgrade from a corsa, oh yeah did i mention that mines for sale??

As said they are a pretty decent car and the engine is ok. Its not a performance car but its as fast as you would expect for a 1.6. The only diesel worth getting is the 2.0 dti if performance is any worry as the 1.7dti is dog slow.
