If someone does a bank transfer to me, be it online, in the bank etc how do I know its 100% solid before I let the item go? Its for an £1100 Motorbike so im a bit weary as ive never done it before

From the same bank to bank is instant.

From one bank to another can take 3 days.

A CHAPS transfer is more secure but could cost up to £30 to setup. Worth it for larger amounts, I don't think it's reversable and money is available the same day.

He wants the bike sending to essex by the way via a courier that I sourced, hes not collecting it personally, hence my worries!

Fuck that sound dodgy esp on a Sun. Tell him to wait until mid week until it's fully cleared. If he's genuine he'll wait. Do not let him push you to send.

He said hes put £50 into the account but I cant check till tomorrow, and he wants to put the remaining money in when the courier arrives at my house, and then I hand the keys and bike over to the courier, does this sound right? The bike is apparantley a present for his son for chrimbo.

I asked him to pay the full amount and to wait till the 27th until I gaurentee it clears and he said this..

The way it works is quite simple. As you and I are both HSBC, the call it a bill payment which is deducted from my account immediately and paid in to yours immediately. If you call HSBC they will also confirm this. The reason why I have only paid £50 is show my honesty as neither party has met. The couriers are closed as of Sunday for XMAS that is why I would have to pay a premium to them to pick up on Sunday and deliver on Monday. An element of trust is required as I cant just pay the full balance until I know that the courier is with you but I shall increase the payment tomorrow once you confirm that the money is in the account and clarify with HSBC for your own comfort. Then the balance shall be paid whilst the courier is with you
cheers

It doesnt seem like a textbook scam though? As I dont believe theres a way to scam via bank transfer?

I replied...

I dont have access to internet banking though as its my dads account and the only time I will be able to check it is today (saturday), I dont live with my dad and he wont be there on sunday for me to check the balance on HSBC website when the courier is here, unless you pay the full amount today (saturday) so it can be checked and verified I dont think where going to have a deal anytime before christmas mate, its just not worth the risk for me im afraid.

He said...

The payment is confirmed and cleared funds are now in your dads account. When you check the account on the net also call them and they shall confirm that it is cleared funds.

Still doesnt seem right for some reason, im gonna move the bike to another address tomorrow to be safe

No HSBC should be straight away, just ask him to get the courrier to come today.

Then as soon as he makes the payment, get your dad to ring the bank and check, as soon as it appears hand the keys over.
