on car adverts (i.e. Audi R8, and Beemer)...

What do they actually do, I wouldn't have thought it's cutting metal bits as the cars look pretty much assembled by that stage

Not cutting no, only if it's a Bond film.

I should imagine it is for alignment and detection purposes, like Haimsey mentioned.

Lasers for cutting work in very close proximity to the metalwork, i.e. maybe 1-10mm

we use lasers at work to guage the profile of surfaces. may be something similar?

Maybe it's scanning the bodywork or paint for irregularities? Or maybe its to dramaticise the ad like Hammer says.

you need some carbon dioxide lasers, they rule. They are not visible and and can hurt up something bad lol
