can i just plug a harddrive from an old computer (a dead pc) into my pc (taking my harddrive out and replacing it with the one from the dead 1) would it just boot xp up as normal and run what is on the newly installed harddrive or will i have to format it and loose everything?

it will probs run, but in will no doubt spits its dummps, its alway best too wipe a hard drive and do a fresh install when it came from another computerm, cause you will have a diff mobo, cpu, and many other bits that it wont like.

it may work, will probably blue screen on boot up though, or go into a crashing/rebooting loop

Yea, will work fine, though you will probably want to press F8 during boot to get to the boot menu and start it up in Safe Mode as the installed drivers wont be compatible with your new systems devices, unless they are both identical machines.

I've done it several times when repairing machines at work.

so have i and most times if the hardware is different, it goes into an endless loop of rebooting, even if you go into safemode

but, sometimes it works, i guess you've just been lucky, but theres no way you can say it will definatly work fine

i do this shit day in day out, fro mmy experiences most of the time, it isnt fine, maybe between pcs with similar hardware, but we've just had to wipe and rebuild 1000's of PC's for sites that are closing and believe me if we could get it to work using the same image between different pc's it would have made our life easier, fact is we tried on several different types and we just got what i described.
