Between 60 and 80mph really. Depends how the cars feeling, if it's warmed up. Believe me, a cold 12v engine doing 80mph does not sound nice.

I am pretty limited by what speeds I can do and for how long due to the actual car, rather than my foot. I'd still only really sit at 80mph if I had a super fast car.

if you raise the speed limit people will just go faster, i mean people happily do 20mph over the limit on the motorway so if the limit is raised by 10mph most people will continue to do that so speeds on the motorway just get more dangerous

I dont think they will because you start to hear the engine work harder etc in majority of cars.

But anways, it should be raised. It works in germany - there is your evidence.

I love sittin at 90, everytime i go on a long journey, i sit at 90.

I think 90's pushing it, at least if you come round a corner with 80 on ya speedo and there a camera van on the bridge you shouldnt be expecting any nasty post in a weeks time.

all about driver confidence if you ask me,

Im the first to admit that if I can do 100 on a motorway I will, I feel just as safe at a ton as I do at 70

infact i feel far safer in the outside lane away from all the lorrys changing lanes and on and off slip roads

I am by no means over confident though

You have to consider driving conditions as well. My dad has an M3, and yes, he gives it some sometimes, but he doesn't take risks.

EDIT: Matt, that isn't directed at you, I meant 'You' as in people in general.

Most motorways are too busy when I use them to do anywhere near 85 mph

Also if you allow 85 folk will make 95-100mph their comfort zone for driving & thats too high imo

I go to and from Cardiff alot due to my GF being at uni there, If im on the M5 at 11 o clock at night I can see maybe 1 or 2 cars in a few mins, should be more tollerance at night deffo

Deano, I wouldnt dream of doing a ton in the rain you deffo have to take driving conditions into consideration as well

thats probably the only time i use the two inside lanes when its raining

We should do the same as on the continent and have a variable speed limit on the motorways dependant on weather. In the dry the limit is about 80ish and in the wet its 60; they strictly enforce it and fine people for straying.

however very few people exceed the limit, 80 seems to be comfortable and you only get the occasional car hooning past you. I tend to sit about 80ish if possible and there arn't any hills - I struggle with hills in my 1.2

i drive at least 130 miles a day, the majority of these are motorway miles, average 75-80 as i get good mpg at that speed. i think we should have an 85/90 speedlimit, that is cut back to 70 in the wet. however i doubt this would be easy to enforce. and tbh there are some horrific drivers on our roads! therfore, im totally contradicting myself

Same here. Also, how many accidents are we going to have at 80 - 85 during rush hour. Just this morning i have seen 2 accidents doing 40 miles. Roads are nice and dry, it's not dark and no ice.

im more concerned about people using lanes incorrectly, that causes more problems.

we need a system like germany where its an offence to be in a lane if the adjacent lane is clear.

im sure ash will concur that the standards of driving and courtesy over there are many times better
