DAN @VSPORT
s1 gearbox is a shorted ratio'd box but if you cant find one just get an s1 xsi gearbox as they are the same tbh.
there was no official "s1" gti although there are a couple of things that distinguish the early and later models being the side strips and less powerfull engine in the earlier models so in retrespect you could argue that there are "s1" and "s2" gti's.
on the edge there are many arguments as to which handles better, the rallye is allot more twitchy on the edge going flat out down a b road where as the gti seems to be a bit more planted with its little heavier weight but this all comes down to the driver and the situation.
if you mate fancies a rallye tell him to get onto the 106rallye.co.uk forum as there are some mint examples for sale, also you say that the one he has looked at has a "crabbing" shell this is more than likely the bushes on the rear beam that are gone and is a common fault on older high millage cars or cars that have been lowered allot and been ragged about so you can get the same problem on a gti.
if he can afford the extra premium tell him to get a yellow gti as they hold their value so much better but if he wants thrills or track use tell him he needs a s2 rallye with a 16v engine in it.
that is all

Having drove both i would say that my VTS deffinetly felt far more planted and they were both on bilstiens with the same springs. i would love a S2 Rallye with a 16v lump though, that would be perfection of the two. .
and agree with the gearbox, from 1st to 2nd there was always a slight drop while the power had to pick up in my vts

S1 box is very short, 1.4 xsi is closest match but you really cant be the rallye ratios. They generally go for about £200 working, I sold mine in need of a recon for £80. Im now running an S1 box with a quaife ATB, it was definately the best thing I could have done its soo much fun. Get a GTI if youre a poof or a girl, if you want something much cooler and, more fun get a rallye. 16v rallye is a good option but I wouldnt bother doing the conversion yourself. If you do go for a 16v'd Rallye go for the S1, it is lighter and cooler all round in my opinion

was going to say 1.4 XSi box is not the same as S1.
I loved my S1 but with those short ratios its an ass on the motorway, although hitting the limiter in 5th is amusing

106 Rallye 1.01: All sports 106's use the same ratios only the FD is different.
Come on Butler you should know this by now.
