I'm after some coilovers for my clio 172 and found H&R are really good for them but cost 730 quid! Without the setup.
Any decent makes or types for around 500 quid?

well perfomance GTI mag fitted a set of £1200 coilovers to a clio cup (cant remember which ones they were), had it set up by a rally team and it actully made it slower round the track so id choose very carefully the suspension you are going to stick on it.
Iv got a 172, and would only really stick a set of trophey shocks on it, and mabee and hi quality set springs that lower it slightly (just for looks)
saying that Iv herd good things about H&R's though, but then again you have to pay for them

For the clio 172 the H&R's are highly rated as if set up right (cue Mark Fish) they can ride just as well if not better than the stock set up and perform well.
Gaz are good but very hard regardless of setting IMO
Bilsteins are mega money and not worth it unless you track your car regularly

the 'hardness' associated with Gaz is mainly down to people not setting them up correctly or choosing the right springs upon order.

I know of a clio with them set up by a pro who is well genuinely established in motorsport and I am going by his word. No matter how much the rebound rate etc was ajusted still the owner maintained they were too hard for every day use.
Gaz is exceptionally good value for what they are but they are still budget coilovers in my eyes.

Gaz are a budget kit I agree, but easily the best kits under the £700 mark.
if you want full bump and rebound adjustability look at the Gaz Gold range, very very nice

H & R are the best under £900 coilovers for the clio, pss-9's are the ones to go for tho if you can afford them.
a new kit by AST should be out now, which, if anything like previous products by them, will be awesome.
good coilovers for cheap money dont work IMO! why are you after coilovers out of interest!

Soooo many more smiles per mile mate...I cant stop driving it
Did 10 miles extra after work today and just done another 10 miles after going to the gym....and its sooooooo much better on petrol even when ragging it so for me its been a wise decision!
You can defo tell its been built on abudget and the quality is no where near the GSi and I do miss the comfort a bit but it just has so much soul and character which is what I wanted in a car.
Maxogen and maybe a full exhaust on the cards next I hope

Standard Cup Shocks with Eibach springs iirc...Rides hard, but feels well planted and assured.
