Obviously I know the bloke immediately before me, but I'd quite like to get in contact with the original owner (the one who bought the car from VW) to get the full history on the car, and the reason behind it being registered late.
Can/will the DVLA provide this info, or if not, where can I get it?

Is it not in the history? And do you mean the german guy who was in the army? Good luck with that.

He was English That's only an alledged story anyway, that's the reason I want to find out.
The history file only goes back to 1988 in tax discs, everything else is 2004 onwards

Maybe trace it as far back as you can go and contact the oldest owner and ask if they have contact details for te previous owner to him/her? Its a long shot though.

im sure you can get a list of previous owners from the dvla best bet is to contact them and mention you are tracing the history of a classic car! As said i'm sure it costs though!
I seem to remember one of my dads cars think it was a sierra. The chap had done this and he had photocopys of all the previous logbooks from the dvla
