I read BMW Car, so hardly biased on the cars, and said that, as the all round car, they'd always find themselves driving off in the 3.0is. The M was too loud, back breaking etc which I can't really see myself.

I'd have the M version without a doubt. The straight 6 out the E46 M3 is beautiful, and voted best engine for god knows how many years.
