My mate is looking for a car to replace his puma. I dont know exactly what he wants from a car tbh
Pro's and cons with either car would help 
Not the new shape Golf the one before it i think its mk5 ?????

Depends what mileage he does really, if he's high miles get the diesel, else petrol all the way.

Since ive bought my diesel ive been kinda bored with it. Love the ease of overtaking etc, but off the lights isnt exciting. I doubt ill get another diesel for a while.

He would be looking at the mk4 shape,
the gt tdi's are very good economy and can be pretty wuick once tuned.
With the petrol engines there is the gti which is a 2.0 which is really abismal and should never have been badged as such imo.
Then there is the 1.8 turbo gti which comes in 150bhp or 180bhp (in some later models after the anniversary was produced) as standard.
With the 1.8T GTI engines, there were two types of turbo that came on them
pre 2001ish was the Ko3
post 2001 was the Ko3s
The engines with the ko3s turbos can be remapped to slightly higher power, from 150 to just over 200bhp iirc.
