Guy in the garage wouldnt of been able to open it even if he wanted to, they dont have the key/codes to do so.
Its very very easy for someone, totally unrelated to the garage, to install a machine that clones the card directly to the cash point - has happened to a few around me.
If the cards were being cloned in the shop itself, then I only blame the people who own the cards, as their is no need to hand over the card anymore with the new machines.

the cash machine will look a little different, normally something extra stuck over and around the slot where you put the card in. If it looks strange, dont use it. It can happen to any machine though, one of the ones by me was the actual Natwest bank machine outside the bank itself.

In tesco petrol stations (ones round here anyway) they have to swipe your card for you to be able to put your pin number in.

you can see them when they are doing this though, no reason why they should be able to get another swipe in through a reader of their own.

Petrol stations seem to have a reputation for this.
I always pay for cash for petrol.
