Has anyone on here one gsi valve stem seals????? Mine are being delivered tmorrow. And wanted to know if you removed the head or not. On other engines i have done a drop valve proceedure where i screw an adapter into the spark plug hole and plug that into a compressed air supply. This keeps the valve shut while the spring and colletts are removed. Any help please guys

Yes, you need to remove the head.

Yes you can do it with the compressed air method, it might be tricky getting to the seals tho with the valves still in.

Does it smoke badly when you first start it after being left overnight?

after being left over night it should smoke 'blue' until its had a blast then should clear. if not it could be that the guids are also worn. or as said could be rings.
i would also do a compresstion test before starting the work.

will check in the morning as its not my daily drive at the mo. It doesnt do it badly on tickover, even when first started but clears a bit as it gets warmer but doesnt dissapear completely.

needs the head off on a 16v smallblock.
also worth doing the piston rings while its off, if the stem seals are gone the piston rings wont be far behind!

had a look today and changd the oil to its proper semi synthetic 5W 30. Also added a wynns oil treatment but to no avail. (really dont have the time to strip it down). Eventually bit the bullett, ordered the seals and started strpping. Well took the top half of the inlt manifold off and was horrified to see a PUDDLE of oil in the throttle body! Not wet but a PUDDLE! Cleaned it all out and found some blocked breathers from the rocker cover to the presummably sump drain pipe and rocker cover to throttle body. Cleaned them all out, re seated the rocker cover as it did leak a smidge before and now the smoke is nearly nout except under load, ie right foot hard down and i get a wee bit. Really pleased now as the emissions were rock bottom and it passed its MOT Hooray! Still will rebuild it in the winter but at the mo i need to drive it. Im hopingthe system will clear the rest of the shit out itself and be nearly nothing.
