My student loan application is taking aaaaages to come through and ive got myto make some payments come Sept 2nd. They dont tell you much on the phone apart from 'Its being verified' like it has been for the past 2 monts or something silly.

Anyway I applied for a student account with Halifax the other day only to be declined due to what I can only assume is a bad credit rating! I have one credit card with HSBC I think ive missed a payment on once. I just applied for an Equifax statement but after ages on the phone I was told I still hadnt answered enough security questions and need to send them some documents.

I cant think what could give me a bad credit rating, I had a loan from premium finance when I took out my policy with Flux but I cancelled that when I found out about it and had the money refunded.

What do you think I should do? Go to HSBC for a student account? What could cause my application to be declined?

may sound a stupid question but did you have all the proof you are actually a student with you?

Also, did they not tell you why it had been declined, or did you not ask?

have you tried the site which does you a free credit rating for 30 days, (just make sure you cancel before 30 days)

Yeah I took my UCAS letter and was told it was all in order.

I assume experian are similiar to Equifax, il have a look.

Otherwise I reckon il ask HSBC about changing my current account to a student one. Would be nice to know why Halifax refused me though!

it's because you drive a 8v, if you had 16v's this would not be a problem.

Cheers Rus However rubbish news that may be.

Well my credit report has come up as 'Fair', and only shows 1 payment ever as being missed. Its pretty standard tbh as it should be. Nothing to suggest I should be refused a student account though! Will have to speak with HSBC tomorrow.

Strick, cheers for the site. It still cost me 6 quid though, false advertising and all.

Paul mate, do some work.

mate i got declined for one of the halifax student accounts aswell, go with hsbc, if you already got an account just take proof into the bank and they should be able to transfer you onto one, it needs to be an original copy of a letter from the University/college stating you will be studying next year

When do you start? You'll get the actual loan upto 5 days from the date of enrollment, which will be in the first week.

Halifax are the shittest bank in the world. Ive had loads of problems with them as they think my credit rating is bad and im in debt etc... so they keep writing to tell me saying they can help me out which really pisses me off. Every time they phone I say im not in debt and dont need help so dont call me again.

I have been to other banks and taken out plenty of credit agreements and my credit score according to them is really high and I have no problem getting accounts and finance.

Halifax are just a bunch of numptys.

Weird one that, prob same thing as Tom J with regards to my credit rating. Anyhow HSBC were happy to take me on, and didnt even check my credit rating.

I had a nightmare trying to open a Halifax account

My application was declined even though they had given me an account number ect - turned out after weeks of trying to find out why (nobody would/could give me an explanation) it was simply because I had applied online and hadn't ticked the box to say I accepted their terms and conditions!!!

All sorted now, got my bank card, cheque book ect and a nice grovelling letter of apology
